Vortex #2 - William Cardini (2012). Goopy alien wizards melt, battle and stab their way from each others’ stomachs in cosmic landscapes forged from bold halftones and thick wacom lines. The contrast between low-res digital textures and organic shapes is a real eyeball melter. No. 2 expands the Hyperverse mythos with backstory on its Vortex Warriors, though the visuals speak loudest in this issue.Hyperspeed to Nowhere - Lale Westvind (2011). Collection of short sci-fi comics with a clever twists on familiar tropes (space malls, psychic worms, antiquated future societies). Flat, muted colors compliment Westvind’s explosive lineart. Her alien desert traveller story captures the mystic vibe of early Heavy Metal comix. Noisy, restless, fun.Gnartoons #1 - James the Stanton (2012). A man wanders through the desert conversing with mechanical bird-snakes that emerge from the ground. Horned beasts share tacos around a campfire. The science class hamster laments his existence as kids dress him in a tiny wizard robe. James the Stanton reinforces his psychedelic scenarios with hilariously understated dialogue and sharp cartooning.
