Excerpts* from Just the Facts panel about women creators in comics and comic publishing. really informative and inspiring imo. Featuring “LadyDrawers at Work” with MariNaomi, Sara Drake, Nicole Boyette, moderated by Anne Elizabeth Moore, from the Chicago Alternative Comics Expo (CAKE) 6-17-12. *Apologies for not having filmed the panel in its entirety, as the battery and memory of my camcorder was effed.

For those that don’t feel like watching the vid, here are some of the facts!:

  • # of Women vs Men PUBLISHED in MAINSTREAM comics: 12% (vs 88%)
  • # of Women vs Men PUBLISHED in INDIE comics: 10% (vs 90%) (surprised?)
  • Women Creator Earning Potential (in comics): 10% above min. wage, 90% below min. wage
  • Breakdown of all gender %s in comics, published or non-published: 54% Male, 39% Female, 2% Transgender, 3% Genderqueer, 2% other (?)
  • Percentage of all Male cartoonists that have sought out a publisher: 56%
  • Percentage of all Male cartoonists that have been published (by someone other than themselves): 75%
  • Percentage of all Women cartooniststhat have sought out a publisher: 54%
  • Percentage of all Women cartoonists that have been published(by someone other than themselves): 61%
